Cusco to Hidroelectica
Firstly, the route doesn’t pass through the towns of Limatambo or Mollepata. Actually, the route takes the main road between Cusco and Quillabamba. The first section of the route is Cusco - Santa Maria (a small Amazonian town). The second section is between Santa Maria and Santa Teresa (another small Amazonian town). And the third section is between Santa Teresa and Hidroelectrica. This place is the final stop of the local train and also ours. Locals and tourists from the Salkantay trek arrive here.
The trip between Cusco and Santa Maria is on a paved road and takes about 5 hours. The trip from Santa Maria to Hidroelectrica doesn’t have a paved road and takes around 2 hours.
Before traveling this route, we recommend you inform yourself about the latest events with our staff and if you travel with another company, do the same.
Cusco
Cusco is the center of Inca history. There are important archaeological centers that surround the city and it is the place where the adventure begins. The city of Cusco is located at an altitude of 3400 meters above sea level. It is one of the most important cities in Peru, although the city is old it contrasts with its modernity. You can find recommendations and useful information for the traveler on our website.
Hidroelectrica
Nowadays, Hidroelectrica is a stopping place for tourists visiting Machu Pichu. It is the arrival point for tourist buses and the final stop for the local train. Hidroelectrica is the starting point to the town of Machu Picchu (also known as Aguas Calientes). The road is alongside the train tracks and the Urubamba River. The journey on foot takes about 2 to 3 hours, it is impossible to miss the trail to the town of Machu Picchu.
The highlight of the hike is the natural scenery. Lush vegetation, pleasant climate, small mountain streams, birds, etc.
